• Like several metropolitan agglomerations, Bordeaux wishes to equip itself with a cable car.

  • Six routes will be submitted to the public inquiry, in a corridor which will start from La Buttinière in Lormont on the right bank, and will transplant towards Achard in the Bacalan district, on the left bank.

  • The objective is to transport approximately 15,000 people per day and to connect line A of the tramway on the right bank to line B on the left bank.

They all want their cable car... After Brest in 2016, Toulouse next spring, Créteil and Nice around 2025, Bordeaux also wants to create cable transport over the Garonne within five to six years.

Relatively quick to implement and financially acceptable, the cable car ticks all the boxes.

20 Minutes

takes stock of the Bordeaux project, before the consultation phase planned before the summer.

What route?

Three sites were initially studied, between Bassens and Blanquefort, between Bègles and Bordeaux and between Lormont-Cenon and the Achard district in Bordeaux.

It was the latter that was retained.

It now remains to refine the route between six possible scenarios, even if the idea is to "start from the Buttinière pole in Lormont, continue above the corridor of the tramway which goes down to the Cenon station, make a stop at Lissandre for a connection with the Bassens-Campus bus line, then transplant towards Achard, near the Aquitaine bridge on the left bank, mainly flying over wasteland and industrial sites, explains Jean Touzeau, the mayor of Lormont and vice-president of Bordeaux Métropole in charge of the development of the river and the crossings and rebalancing towards the right bank.

Dwellings and natural spaces will be very little affected.

On the other hand, this corridor is located at the limit of the Unesco perimeter of Bordeaux.

“It will indeed be necessary to look at this carefully” recognizes the elected official.

What interest ?

The cable car does not have only followers.

On the right, the former vice-president in charge of transport and mayor of Saint-Aubin-de-Médoc Christophe Duprat (LR) evokes a “useless” project in view of an announced attendance of 15,000 travelers per day.

“Of course, a cable car alone will not resolve the issues of mobility or the mire that we are experiencing on the right bank, recognizes Jean Touzeau.

But it is a very interesting element which will make it possible to connect line A (at Buttinière) and line B (at Achard) of the tramway in seven minutes.

This link will therefore connect three major transport networks with the Bassens-Campus line, and will make it possible to rethink the transport network around La Buttinière.

One of our objectives is to create more and more park-and-ride facilities outside the ring road,

to allow users to leave their car there and reach La Buttinière by bus, from where they can take the tram or cable car to cross the Garonne.

It is complementary.

»

On the other hand, the cable car must be interrupted for a certain period each year, for maintenance operations.

“The immobilization would be of the order of fifteen days a year, assures Jean Touzeau.

The maintenance could be done during a holiday period, and there is still tram line A to connect the two banks.

»

What cost?

Depending on the route chosen, the budget, which includes the development of stations, the transport system made up of pylons, cables and cabins, as well as the creation of park-and-ride facilities and footbridges, would be between 55 and 70 million euros. .

"I don't know of any crossing device as positive as this in budgetary terms, since we are on the equivalent of three kilometers of tramway", assures Jean Touzeau.

In addition to the interest in daily transport, the elected official also sees in it a possibility of tourist development: "It will be interesting to take this cable car to discover the slopes of the Garonne, the Rocher de Palmer and all the attractions of the right bank.

»

What schedule?

The consultation phase should start in May-June, for a period of two months.

“Several routes will be subject to public inquiry, the interest being to choose the least penalizing corridor for the inhabitants and on the environmental level, continues Jean Touzeau.

The president of the metropolis wants to move this file forward very quickly.

The commissioning could take place around 2027.
