Users of the Nantes-Châteaubriant line know this well… Every winter since the tram-train line was put into service in 2014, disruptions are regularly caused by frost.
When this thin layer of ice has the misfortune to settle on the catenaries that supply the trains with electricity, it is guaranteed to paralyze traffic, and a hassle for travellers.
A phenomenon that could impact the proper functioning of this 64 km line which occurs “on average 30 to 35 days a year”, indicates SNCF Réseau, which has just carried out much-awaited work.
Works for 1.5 million euros
Three years after an initial experiment on 300 meters of line, heating cables were installed over 6 km (the sector most particularly affected by frost) between the Nantes station exit and Babinière, and put into service at the end of January 2022 An innovative device with “rapid” activation, which can be carried out “while the tram-train trains are running”, indicates SNCF Réseau.
The work, at a cost of 1.5 million euros, was 80% financed by the State, as part of the recovery plan and the rest by the region.
Nearly 730,000 trips are recorded on average per year on this line, which has been criticized since its launch for its lack of reliability and comfort.
