This Tuesday, the European Commission presented its plan to 43 billion euros, in favor of the semiconductor industry, within the framework of the “

European Chips Act

” plan.

The objective is to secure supplies and reduce the dependence of Europeans on Asia, in this strategic sector which has suffered shortages since the start of the pandemic.

Strengthening European sovereignty by creating new factories is the objective of this investment plan in the field of semiconductors, these

essential components

for the automotive industry and technologies including everyday life.

The pandemic has spurred demand for microchips, and exposed Europeans' dependence on Asian producers.

Europe today produces barely 10% of the world's semiconductors.

It's twice less than in the 90s.

This Commission plan led by Commissioner Thierry Breton, which has yet to be adopted by member countries and the European Parliament, provides 13 billion euros in subsidies to fund research.

As well as an envelope of 30 billion, to build state-of-the-art factories in Europe.

The EU wants to produce 20% of semiconductors on the world market by 2030, said the President of the European Executive, Ursula von der Leyen.

The #EUChipsAct is a plan to make Europe a leader in the chips market.

We have a very clear target: by 2030, 20% of the world's microchips should be produced in Europe.

The United States is stepping up its efforts, too.

The US government is planning a 45 billion euro plan to revitalize the microchip sector.

In January

the giant Intel

announced the construction on American soil and in Europe of semiconductor factories.
