As early as 2008, the Kronoberg Region decided that Ljungby Hospital needed to be refurbished and expanded for around half a billion kronor.

But in the summer of 2020, the extension had to be stopped when deficiencies in the construction of one of the houses were discovered.

The discovery meant that a house had to be demolished and then the extension needed to be even larger.

This means that the cost is now expected to be just over 1.3 billion instead of half a billion.

- When we have now made an investigation, we have seen that, for example, tomorrow's operating theaters require larger areas.

We must build on the care of the future.

In retrospect, it was lucky that it turned out the way it did.

Had we built according to the first plan, we would have built both for small operating theaters and for small IVA places, says Mikael Johansson (M), Chairman of the Regional Board.

May be ready in 2030

The building now proposed is 17,650 square meters in size.

It is planned to be equipped with a state-of-the-art operating department and two care departments that have 24 care places each.

An ambulance station will also have space.

- The citizens of the western part of the county have long been waiting for a decision to develop Ljungby hospital.

We now have a ready-made proposal for a decision, where we make sure that we get buildings that can handle the healthcare of the future, says Mikael Johansson (M), chairman of the regional board in a press release.

If the building is demolished, it will continue during the years 2022–2030.

The Kronoberg region has produced an investment document that the regional council will decide on 2 March.
