Daniel Benaim, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arabian Peninsula Affairs, said in an interview with Al-Jazeera that the United States rejects any normalization with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Benaim told Al Jazeera that the position of the United States is against any normalization with Syria, and that it will not support others doing such normalization.

The US official added, "We do not believe that Bashar al-Assad has done enough to rehabilitate him internationally, and we have clarified the US position and the US law related to this matter to the countries of the region."

And last January, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez of the Democrats, the committee's top Republican, Jim Risch, and other members of Congress sent a letter to President Joe Biden expressing concern that a number of Arab partners were continuing to cement their formal and informal ties. with the Assad regime.

The letter called for making sure that all countries realize that normalization or Assad's return to the Arab League is unacceptable, and that tacit approval of official diplomatic dealings with the Syrian regime sets a dangerous precedent for tyrants who seek to commit similar crimes against humanity, as they describe.

Since last July, steps have been accelerated by Arab countries to restore their relations with the Syrian regime, especially by the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt and Jordan, represented by mutual meetings, agreements and economic understandings.

And last week, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, announced that the issue of Syria's return to the League was not raised during the Arab consultative ministerial meeting in Kuwait, explaining that the issue of the return of any country to participate in the League is preceded by consultations, ideas and a proposal for a draft resolution and consideration of what is required from the Syrian side. , this has not yet been reached.

The Arab League decided in November 2011 to freeze Syria's membership against the backdrop of the Assad regime's resorting to the military option, to quell the popular revolution against his rule.
