The mail-order giant is facing several attempts to unionize, such as in Staten Island, New York, and Bessemer, Alabama.

If successful, it would be the first union in an Amazon warehouse in the United States.

In the United States, the countdown has begun for the 6,100 employees of the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama.

They have until March 27 to answer the question: "

Do you want a union?"

In the 25 years that it has existed, the mail-order giant has never had one.

Stuart Appelbaum is the president of one of the unions in the sector, RWDSU.

For him, this whole affair is snowballing.

"

We think we've reignited worker activism in the United States and around the world: through the first election, through our campaign, workers saw they could stand up against Amazon, and against their employers in general.

Workers at other warehouses have started speaking out against Amazon;

we've seen it in other companies too, like Starbucks, and we're happy about it.

Intimidation

Last year a first vote had been very followed, up to the White House.

The answer was 'no'

, but the ballot was canceled because the company had '

interfered with the right of employees to make a free and considered choice

'.

I think we have a problem with our labor law in the United States,

he continues.

When we see the intimidation practiced by Amazon and its way of interfering in the ballot, we understand why people were afraid to vote to unionize.

They were told to vote in a specific location, with cameras pointed at them, in a place covered in anti-union propaganda.

They were told that the warehouse might close, that they might lose their already acquired profits.

In late January, the US Labor Rights Agency (NLRB) filed a lawsuit accusing Amazon of trying to dissuade workers at a warehouse in Staten Island, New York, from unionizing, claiming that a union would "

futile

" or calling those leading the organizing effort "

thugs

".

"

Amazon's business model is based on dehumanization

"

Amazon's business model is based on the dehumanization and mistreatment of its employees," said

Stuart Appelbaum, president of one of the sector's unions, RWDSU.

The working conditions in their warehouses are so bad that the turnover of workers is 150% each year: on average people don't stay longer than eight months, then they leave because they can't take it anymore.

People want their humanity to be respected, they feel like they are treated like robots, ruled by other robots.

They are angry because of the lack of safety and prevention of accidents at work: six people have already died in this warehouse which has only existed for two years.

The pressure is huge, people can't handle the physical and mental stress, and they want that to change

.

»

Amazon now employs more than 1.6 million people worldwide.

The company claims a starting wage for warehouse and logistics center employees that exceeds $18 an hour in the United States.

The purpose of this election is not just to organize workers in this warehouse, but also to determine how workers everywhere else will be treated in the future.

We do not want Amazon's operating model to become that of work,

pleads the trade unionist.

So this election transcends that one warehouse and that one company.
