Even if it has been slightly less busy since the start of the health crisis, the Nantes ring road remains regularly saturated at rush hour.

Developments aimed at improving traffic flow have already been carried out in recent years, in particular on the western ring road.

But other projects must make it possible to fight against traffic jams.

Point.

The gate of Gesvres not yet released

This is the big job at the moment.

The transformation of the Porte de Gesvres, northeast of Nantes, at the junction with the A11 motorway, was launched a year ago.

The objective is to convert this well-known bottleneck to 2x2 lanes since the road was reduced to one lane in both directions.

The corrective work involves the complete reconfiguration of the interchange.

An important step took place this week with the commissioning of a new, definitive ramp, with no significant benefit to traffic for the time being.

It will be necessary to wait at least another year for the construction site to be completed.

Its cost is estimated at 47 million euros, including 12 at the expense of the metropolis.

“This major project will save 30% in travel time between the Porte de Rennes and the Porte de La Chapelle”, estimates the State.

The Bellevue Bridge will be widened

Frequented by nearly 90,000 vehicles every day, the Bellevue bridge remains one of the main black spots on the Nantes ring road, despite extensive work carried out twelve years ago.

A new project to widen the bridge and modify the interchanges is therefore on track with the aim of adding two to three additional lanes, mainly in the south-north direction, by 2027. Public consultation has been completed and the choice of final development will be decided in 2022. Nantes Métropole says it is "rather favorable" to this project criticized by environmentalists but asks the State to devote more space to lanes reserved for public transport, to widen cycle paths and better take into account environmental issues.

Something new to make Porte d'Anjou more fluid

Still to the east of Nantes, a new development is expected to make the Porte d'Anjou interchange more fluid.

A lane dedicated to carpooling and public transport will indeed be put into service before the end of spring on Boulevard de la Prairie de Mauves, more precisely on the right-hand lane in the outgoing direction (Nantes towards Porte d'Anjou). .

Only vehicles carrying at least two people on board will be authorized on this 2.2 km long section.

Buses, coaches and emergency vehicles will also have access.

“At peak times, the travel time could be practically halved at this location, according to the studies carried out”, indicates Bertrand Affilé, vice-president of Nantes metropolis.

Buses and carpoolers pampered in the south

In the same spirit as Boulevard de la Prairie de Mauves, a lane reserved for public transport and carpoolers will be built at the end of the year at the southern entrance to Nantes, between Pont-Saint-Martin, Les Sorinières and Vertou.

Work has started.

It will first be created along the A83, in a south-north direction, for approximately 3.5 km to the ring road (Porte des Sorinières).

Five Aléop bus lines currently use this section, which is often congested in the morning.

Nantes Métropole is also planning to extend this route on the Boulevard de Vendée, to the Bourdonnières roundabout, or even to line 4 of the busway (Clos Toreau).

The project will be submitted to the vote of elected officials this Friday.

By 2025, this reserved lane could be created further south, at the Viais interchange.
