Thursday evening, a Mauritian oil tanker ran aground near the coast of Reunion, in the Indian Ocean, overturned by cyclone Batsirai.

The island has been swept for more than 24 hours by this powerful atmospheric mass whose authorities anticipate an intensification of winds and rains.

The ship's crew was finally rescued and brought ashore overnight from Thursday to Friday.

"The perilous, very technical and unprecedented operation to rescue the 11 sailors from the TrestaStar ship took place successfully between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.", greeted the prefect of the island.

Overseas Minister Sébastien Lecornu clarified earlier that the tanker was sailing "empty", ruling out at this stage the "risk of serious maritime pollution by hydrocarbons".
