The Sultanate of Oman officially inaugurated the port of "Duqm", on which Muscat is counting in strengthening its position as a global logistics center and a major driver of the national economy and for projects under construction within the Oman 2040 vision.

The port was officially opened today, Friday, in the presence of King Philippe Louis Marie of Belgium and a large number of officials in Oman.

The port of Duqm is located on the southeast coast of the Sultanate of Oman, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, and is qualified to become one of the largest ports in the Middle East in the long term, especially as it avoids maritime navigation entering the Strait of Hormuz.

Duqm Economic Zone is about 550 km from the Omani capital, Muscat, and enjoys a set of competitive advantages that qualify it to become a regional marine transport station and logistics gateway to the Gulf region, in addition to its proximity to consumer markets in Asia and Africa.

The Port of Duqm is located within the Duqm region, which is the largest economic zone in the Middle East and North Africa, and represents a model of economic integration, as it contains 8 economic and service areas, including a multi-purpose port, a dry dock for ship repair, a fishing port, tourist, industrial and logistical areas, and an educational city. It is a modern residential city.


Big chances

Duqm port is the largest port in the Sultanate, and is expected to bring more profits to the Omani economy and provide great opportunities for foreign investments, such as logistical services such as land, sea and air transport.

During his speech at the opening of the port, the Vice-President of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones in the Sultanate of Oman, Engineer Ahmed bin Hassan Al Dheeb, said that Duqm Port represents an important tributary in the Omani economy and is a major driver of projects under construction and projects under construction within the Oman 2040 vision.

Al-Theeb added that the port was equipped to be of high specifications, as it consists of 3 main berths: the commercial berth, the government berth, and the liquid materials berth. The total length of the breakwaters is about 8.7 kilometers.

He explained that the port’s dock depth is 18 meters and the entry channel is 19 meters, which qualifies the port to receive and handle the largest container ships in the world and giant oil ships.

Al-Theeb added that 60% of the operation of the container cranes and bridge cranes of the commercial berth of the port has been completed, which are ready to handle the largest container ships in the world.

The Port of Duqm is one of the existing projects in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, which was established on October 26, 2011, with the aim of attracting a variety of economic and industrial activities such as refineries, petrochemical industries, commercial activities, tourism, logistics, light and medium industries, fish industries and real estate development projects.

The area of ​​Duqm is two thousand square kilometers, which qualifies it to keep pace with the requests of investors wishing to obtain relatively large lands for the implementation of their investment projects. The area also allows developers who wish to implement various projects on areas of more than 50 hectares, while giving them additional advantages.

At the beginning of this month, the Sultanate said that it plans to transform the port of Duqm into a global center for trading and distributing green hydrogen.

The project is expected to transform the port of Duqm into a center for green hydrogen trading and distribution, placing it on the global hydrogen map in the emerging hydrogen economy and consolidating its position over time with the emergence of new hydrogen shipping methods.
