“So I ultimately decided to send the families home out of an excess of caution, and also because we have a very large presence here,” she told MSNBC.

Quinn said she wanted to ensure that diplomats could return to the States on commercial flights without having to "rush to get out."

Last week, the US Embassy in Kiev again urged American citizens to leave the territory of Ukraine.

The diplomatic mission proposed possible evacuation routes through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.

Earlier, the US State Department allowed the voluntary departure from the territory of Ukraine for some employees of the US Embassy in Kiev and their families.
