In Nicaragua, the trials of opponents to Daniel Ortega continue

This Thursday, February 3, two opposition figures were found guilty of "conspiracy": a former comrade in arms of President Ortega and a student leader.

They are 46 opponents of Daniel Ortega to be prosecuted, all arrested last year before the presidential election.

The historian Dora Maria Tellez is a former Sandinista guerrilla;

she is also one of the founders of one of the opposition parties to Daniel Ortega.

We do not know the length of his sentence, but according to a member of the opposition the prosecution had requested 15 years in prison.

Student leader Lesther Aleman is known for calling on the president to resign during the 2018 dialogue between governments and social partners, amid anti-government protests that were bloodily repressed, making, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights man, at least 355 dead.

They were a coup attempt inspired by Washington, authorities say.

And this Thursday, February 3, it is "criminal association undermining national integrity" of which the two accused were found guilty, according to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights.

The Cendih for whom these trials are “

 null and void

 ”, speaking of “ 

violation of constitutional guarantees

 ”: no press authorized to attend and only one family member per accused.

On Wednesday, a first female political leader was convicted of conspiracy under new laws passed by the government at the end of 2020, a year before Daniel Ortega was re-elected for a fourth consecutive term.
