In Stockholm, Sweden, a crow that picks up small garbage such as cigarette butts has appeared and is attracting attention.

Swedish startup Corvid Cleaning announced on the 1st that it has developed a device that feeds out food when a crow puts a cigarette butt into a trash can.

The company's founder, Christian Gyunta Hansen, said: "The crows are highly intelligent, so they are easy to train and have a low risk of eating trash.

He also said, "In cooperation with the authorities in Södertelier, Stockholm, we will implement a garbage-picking project using crows."

According to the Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation, a non-profit that promotes recycling, approximately 1 billion cigarette butts are thrown on the streets of Sweden each year, accounting for 62% of total waste.

The annual cost of cleaning the streets of Södertellier is 20 million kronor (about 2.6 billion won), and the cost is expected to decrease significantly when the 'Crow Project' starts.

Hansen said, "If the crows pick up cigarette butts, we expect that the cost of cleaning the streets will be reduced by 75% compared to the present."

This isn't the first time an environmental improvement project has taken advantage of the crow's cleverness.

In 2017, Dutch designers developed a 'Crowbar', a device that feeds out food when a crow puts in trash.

In 2018, six crows received training to pick up cigarette butts at a theme park in France and started working as a janitor.
