Closed hotels, restaurants and shops have not negatively impacted the statistics of those who work in Hesse but live in another state.

For example, the number of people in Hesse who were subject to social insurance contributions rose by around 34,200 (1.3 percent) between June 2020 and June 2021.

As of June 30, 2021, around 2.66 million employees were counted in Hesse, compared to a good 2.62 million a year earlier.

Around 2.25 million of them also lived in the state, in 2020 there were 2.23 million.

The 2021 statistics of the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency count 405,862 people as commuters from another federal state or abroad.

Around 280,000 employees had their jobs outside of their own country, which means that there were more than 120,000 more commuters than commuters.

The number of commuters rose by 14,260 compared to the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of 3.6 percent.

15 percent of the employees in Hesse subject to social security contributions did not live in the state in 2021.

The number of commuters has increased over the past 15 years: while there were still around 294,000 in 2006, the figure for 2021 was 405,862, 38 percent higher than this figure.

The number of commuters also increased during the Corona crisis, by more than 1,000. Of the 280,000 employees residing in Hesse, most commuted to the neighboring federal states of Baden-Württemberg (61,736), Rhineland-Palatinate (58,475) and North Rhine -Westphalia (51,432) and Bavaria (51,155).

Commuters who are in employment subject to social security contributions in Hesse came by far mostly from Rhineland-Palatinate (110,322).

68,257 commuted to Hesse from Bavaria and 66,330 from North Rhine-Westphalia.

In fourth place are the people of Baden-Württemberg with 55,377.

As in the previous year, however, more Hessians have their jobs in Baden-Württemberg than vice versa.

In all other federal states, on the other hand, Hesse has a surplus of commuters.

According to the statistics, the majority of commuters work in corporate management and organization and their number has increased further from a good 63,000 in 2020 to around 67,000 last year.

Commuters from the transport and logistics segment followed in second place with around 33,000, 1,000 more than in 2020.

Sales and trading occupations came third with around 30,000, little changed.

The number of IT specialists increased by around 2,400 to 27,360.

The professions in sales and in the tourism, hotel and hospitality industry that were particularly hard hit by the Corona crisis also recorded significant declines in commuters.
