The Algerian presidency said that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received a call from his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, in which they discussed bilateral relations.

A statement by the Presidency of the Republic stated that Macron renewed Tebboune's invitation to attend the African-European Summit, which is being hosted by the Belgian capital.

This is the first call between the two leaders since a diplomatic crisis erupted between the two countries in early October, against the background of statements by the French president against Algeria that were described as offensive.

Following these statements, Algeria recalled its ambassador to Paris in early October, and he did not return to his duties until the beginning of this year.

In his statements, which were reported by the French newspaper "Le Monde", Macron wondered whether there was an Algerian nation before French colonialism (1830-1962), accusing the Algerian regime of investing in the proceeds of memory and developing a grudge against France.

These statements angered the Algerians at the official and popular levels, as Algeria decided after that to ban the flights of French military aircraft operating in the African coast within the Barkhane force, through Algerian airspace.

It also withdrew its ambassador in Paris for several months, before the French presidency published a statement expressing Macron's respect for the history of Algeria and its people.

On the eighth of last December, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian visited Algeria, and expressed his country's desire to melt the ice and remove the misunderstanding between the two countries.
