The prefect of Var is not happy, and he makes it known.
In a press release, the prefecture indicates that "the sub-prefect of Brignoles sent, on January 27, 2022, a letter to the mayor of Sainte-Anastasie-sur-Issole, asking him to cancel the manifestly illegal consultation" that the city councilor intended to organize Saturday January 29 and Saturday February 6.
The mayor of this small Var town indeed plans to ask via a citizen consultation to his constituents which candidate he should sponsor for the presidential election.
The prefect deplores on the one hand the fact that "no deliberation of the municipal council of Sainte-Anastasie-sur-Issole organizing this consultation has been transmitted to the prefect".
And to add: “Furthermore, a consultation can only relate to a request for an opinion.
The administration is prohibited from giving up its decision-making power by binding itself to its result.
Moreover, the sponsorship of a candidate for the presidential election is a personal and voluntary act of the mayor, which he cannot delegate.
Consequently, it is not possible for a mayor to leave the choice of his patronage to his constituents”.
