Pfizer and BioNTech have just started a study with just over 1,400 healthy people between the ages of 18 and 55, and soon Moderna will also start its clinical trials.
The current covid vaccine provides poorer protection against omicron infection after two doses than they did against previous virus variants.
"A little late for this wave"
En tredje dos ökar skyddet kraftigt men tyvärr hann inte tillräckligt många svenskar få den tredje sprutan i tid för att skydda dem mot smitta i den enorma omikronvåg som nu sveper över landet.
- Så på så sätt kan man säga att omikronuppdateringen kommer lite sent för den här vågen, konstaterar Richard Bergström.
Det finns dock flera skäl till att uppdatera vaccinen.
– Dels kan omikron komma tillbaka, möjligen nästa vinter. Eller så dyker det upp en ny släkting till omikron och då är det bra att ligga lite närmare nästa variant än det ursprungliga viruset som kom för två år sedan.
Nya vaccin till personer med allvarlig immunbrist
Richard Bergström ger också hopp till svenskar med kraftigt nedsatt immunförsvar. Alltså personer som inte har fått ett bra antikroppssvar trots tre till fyra doser mRNA-vaccin.
New protein-based covid-19 vaccines are expected to provide better protection soon.
- Novavax is our first protein vaccine and it will now come at the end of February.
Then comes another protein vaccine from Sanofi and GSK later this spring.
How many doses of covid vaccine will we need to take in the long run?
- We can not have a situation where we have to vaccinate all people in the whole world every four months, but I think we will slip over to pure seasonal activities with a dose in the autumn and winter, says Richard Bergström.
The vaccine companies are also working to develop combined vaccines that will protect against both influenza and covid-19.
"Can be a super cocktail"
Richard Bergström makes the assessment that the combination vaccine will be in place in the autumn of 2023.
– Det kan ju bli en supercocktail med skydd mot covid, influensa, RS-virus och kanske till och med vanlig förkylning. Jag tror inte att det är många som skulle ha något emot att ta en sådan spruta en gång per år, säger Richard Bergström.
