The education and training trade union (VBE) at the conference has accused the ministers of education of concealing the real shortage of teachers by 2030.

The model calculations by the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) on the new supply of originally trained teachers by the year 2030 (specified by the KMK as 349,310) are highly dubious.

Because she expects that every student teacher will also complete their studies and then go to school, both of which are not covered by reality.

The subject-specific teacher shortage in the MINT area will be even more dramatic than the average for all subjects.

Newly trained teachers would only be available for about a third of the positions to be filled by 2030.

A teacher shortage of 81,000 by the year 2030 is to be expected based on a demand calculation commissioned by the VBE by the educational researcher Klaus Klemm.

This does not yet include the additional need for teachers resulting from school policy innovations such as the expansion of all-day schools, inclusion and support for children in challenging social situations.

“Stop calculating the actual need for teachers”

"Politicians must immediately and comprehensively derive the urgently needed consequences from the available knowledge and finally stop calculating the actual need for teachers," says the chairman of the VBE, Udo Beckmann.

His association is therefore calling for a nationwide specialist offensive in which the federal, state and local governments join forces.

In addition, there must urgently be more study places while at the same time improving the study conditions for student teachers.

There must also be equal pay regardless of school type and level, as well as a significant improvement in working conditions.

In order to realize all-day, inclusion and support for children from educationally disadvantaged families, a two-teacher system is needed, which significantly increases the need for teachers.
