The daughter of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who held this position for more than two decades, said on Tuesday that his health was improving, but that he would remain in hospital to receive specialized care.

Marina Mahathir said in a statement that the appetite of her 96-year-old father - who is receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute under the supervision of specialists - is improving and that he jokes with the family.

Mahathir returned to hospital after successfully undergoing an elective procedure on January 8.

The former Prime Minister of Malaysia had been admitted and discharged from the hospital last December, after the doctors treating him said that they were satisfied with the results of his examinations.

Mahathir previously served as prime minister of his country between July 1981 and October 2003, and then again from May 2018 to March 2020, thus becoming the country's longest-serving Prime Minister, with a total of 24 years.
