British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned on Tuesday that talks aimed at reviving the nuclear deal were approaching a serious impasse, as the United States signaled its willingness to meet directly with the Iranians.

Today, Tuesday, the British minister added to Parliament that these negotiations are urgent and the progress they are making is not fast enough.

She explained that Iran must now choose whether it wants to conclude an agreement or be responsible for the collapse of the nuclear agreement, "and if the nuclear agreement collapses, all options will be on the table."

Live meeting

The US State Department had expressed its willingness to meet directly with the Iranians, and said that it was the best way to make the negotiations on the nuclear file a success.

In response to a question by Al-Jazeera, the US State Department added that the direct meeting with the Iranians opens a greater scope for communication, especially since the time for reaching an understanding in Vienna has almost run out, given the pace of Iranian nuclear progress.

For his part, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken denied his knowledge of the possibility of achieving a mutual return to the nuclear agreement, but said, "Mutual return to the agreement remains the best way to re-restrict Tehran's nuclear program," and to allow it to address what he called its abuses.

On the other hand, the Secretary of the Iranian National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, said that the communication between the Iranian and American delegations in the Vienna negotiations so far has been through the exchange of unofficial documents.

Shamkhani added - in a tweet on Twitter - that "there was no need to change this method of communication, and this method will not change unless there is the possibility of obtaining a good agreement."

different messages

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said in statements on Monday that "the American side is sending messages in different ways that it is looking for a certain level of direct talks with Iran."

He added in televised statements, during a conference at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry in Tehran, that "if we reach a point during the negotiations where the conclusion of a good agreement with strong guarantees requires a certain level of talks with the United States, we will not ignore that in our work schedule."

For months, Tehran and the forces still included in the 2015 agreement have been negotiating to revive the agreement, which the United States unilaterally withdrew from in 2018, re-imposing sanctions on Tehran that prompted it to retreat from basic commitments it was included in.

Washington participates indirectly in the talks, and the remaining parties to the agreement, namely Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, as well as the European Union, coordinate positions between the Iranian and American negotiators.
