It has been storming for almost two weeks and it is unusual for it to happen for so long, even though it is common with storms and snow in the Kiruna mountains in January.

- We have had a great avalanche danger in the area Abisko-Riksgränssen since we started avalanche forecasts in the 2022 season. It is relatively unusual that there is such a long period of great avalanche danger, says Stefan Hedlund, area manager for lavinprognoser.se in Abisko-Riksgränssen.

Avalanche activity during the week

At the end of the week, many large and small avalanches were observed that are believed to have gone into the storm on 18-20 January.

Now Stefan Hedlund urges people to avoid avalanche terrain - and if you are going out, regardless of snowmobile or skiing, he wants you to go to lavinprognoser.se.

- You should definitely stay away from steep slopes, ie under a 25 degree slope until the situation has stabilized, avalanches can go completely spontaneously by themselves without you being around yourself, he says.

In the clip, Stefan Hedlund tells what happens when there is a lot of wind in combination with the varying rainfall.
