According to Stoltenberg, there are no other countries that are closer to NATO in cooperation than Sweden and Finland.

- We have a very high degree of cooperation between forces and exchange information with each other, he says during a press conference on Monday.

He sees the fact that Sweden has strengthened its military presence on Gotland in recent weeks as positive for the NATO countries in the immediate area. NATO's strategy in the area is to further equip itself militarily.

Troops are being prepared at the same time as additional ships and fighter jets are being sent to member countries in Eastern Europe.

"Takes all necessary measures"

Jens Stoltenberg says that NATO will continue to take "all necessary measures" to protect and defend all allies, which includes strengthening the eastern part of the alliance, writes the news agency Reuters.

Denmark will, for example, send a frigate to the Baltic Sea and four fighter jets to Lithuania, and the Netherlands has promised to send two fighter jets to Bulgaria this spring, as well as ships and troops to NATO's rapid reaction force, reports TT.

Spain, France and the United States are also announcing reinforcements, while Germany has stopped Estonia from sending German-built weapons to Ukraine.

Sweden's Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) also states that a Russian attack on Ukraine will be met with strong reactions from Sweden.

- It does not require a full invasion for there to be sanctions and other types of harsh measures, she says.

Support through increased assistance

However, there will be no support for Ukraine in the form of military equipment.

- We have very strong rules against arms exports so it is not relevant for us.

But we support Ukraine in many other ways, above all through a very high level of aid for reforms in Ukraine, which we believe is one of the most important.

The Swedish embassy is waiting

Both the US and UK Foreign Ministers have ordered relatives of staff at the embassies in Kiev to leave the country due to the troubled situation.

However, this is not the case for the staff working at the Swedish embassy, at present.

- We have contingency planning for the embassy in Kiev.

Just as we have for other embassies.

But at the moment we do not see that it is needed, says Linde.
