In the early morning of January 23, local time, a shooting occurred in Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California, leaving four dead and one injured.

  A birthday party was being held at the residence at the time of the shooting.

Two women and two men were shot dead, and another man was taken to hospital in a critical, non-life-threatening condition.

  Inglewood Mayor James Butts described the incident as a "targeted ambush," adding that multiple suspects were involved in the incident.

The gunman fired more than 40 rounds at the scene.

Butts said an assault rifle casing was found at the scene, and the gunman used at least one other pistol.

Butts described the incident as the worst shooting in Inglewood since the 1990s.

  Local officials said the motive for the shooting was unclear.

Authorities are looking for multiple suspects, but no one has been arrested.

Officials spoke with witnesses and tried to find surveillance video in the nearby area.

  Inglewood is a city of about 100,000 people 16 kilometers southwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Next month, the annual Major League Rugby Finals (Super Bowl) will be played at the city's SoFi Stadium.
