In the country's second largest city Mombasa, a group is trying to counteract discrimination by discussing with those who are at the forefront of spreading hate speech about sexual minorities - namely the religious leaders.

- I have talked to religious leaders who immediately started praying for me.

They put a Bible on my head and cursed the devil inside me, says Tracy Mwasela, group leader of the organization Pema Kenya.

Ishmael Bahati founded the organization Pema Kenya about ten years ago.

They have now engaged in dialogue with 800 religious leaders, but getting them over to their side is not easy.

Only a dozen now support the organization.

- In Kenya, religious leaders are very important people.

If you want to reach other people, you should do it through a religious leader, he says.
