The statement of the diplomatic mission was published on Facebook.

“Excerpts from the interview of the so-called national patriot Kalve, disseminated by the Latvian media, cause extreme bewilderment,” the embassy noted.

The report says that Kalve "openly and with bravado tells local publications about how in February 2021 he destroyed the Soviet memorial in the center of the city of Jekabpils, tearing off the pedestal and stealing an artillery piece."

The embassy noted that the appearance of the monument was violated and the grave was desecrated, where the remains of Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Latvia from Nazi invaders are buried.

“Everything shows that this citizen feels complete impunity for the crime he committed.

Moreover, he brazenly declares that he intends to continue to “fight” with the Soviet memorial heritage in the future, thereby inspiring his followers to similar “feats,” the embassy said.

The diplomatic mission recalled that the memorial sites are under the protection of a bilateral agreement between Russia and Latvia.
