  • The Ukraine conflict plays the patriotic card against Russian threats

The crisis in Ukraine, which is keeping international relations in suspense in the face of a possible conflict with Russia, has marked this Wednesday the second day of the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, to the United States.

From Washington, Albares did not want to rule out at a press conference the presence of Spanish troops in Ukraine in the coming months if the crisis does not decrease in intensity.

"Dialogue does not mean negotiation," warned Albares in reference to Western contacts with Moscow, "dialogue requires good faith, not setting unacceptable conditions for the other party."

The Ukraine crisis is experiencing a key week.

The Secretary of State of the United States,

Antony Blinken

, with whom Albares met this Tuesday, landed this Wednesday in Kiev to show Washington's support for the Ukrainian president,

Volodimir Zelensky

, and will meet this Thursday with the Russian Foreign Minister

Sergey

Lavrov

.

"Spain has been very clear. We are working within the EU in case that is necessary," Albares said about the possibility of sending troops on the ground.

"The scenario is what it is, and it is tense enough to add future prospects. And now the scenario is one of dialogue. But if we have to get to the stage of discussion, we are working to have a joint response," he explained.

"We cannot go back to the past, to spheres of influence, to limit the sovereignty of countries," he continued.

The Russian demands are "unacceptable," he said.

"Let's not anticipate scenarios"

However, the minister wanted to make it clear that the Spanish bet for the moment is dialogue, along the lines that the allies are developing. "In these moments of great tension, it is important that diplomacy be the one who leads, we do not anticipate scenarios that Spain, the United States, or NATO do not want," Albares said when asked by the media. "At this moment the dialogue is resumed, it is what we all want. There is room for relaxation," he said.

Spain already has an active military participation in the region within NATO deployments.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced on Tuesday that the

Meteoro

maritime action ship had advanced its departure to join the Alliance's naval deployment in the Black Sea.

NATO has permanent naval forces in the area, but in this case the crisis in Ukraine has a decisive influence on the mission, towards which the Spanish ship is already heading.

In addition, Spain participates on a rotating basis in the air mission in the Baltic, which provides protection to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, NATO partners, and is key to monitoring Russian movements in the region.

The conflict with Morocco

Regarding Morocco and the common position agreed with Blinken to seek "a solution" for the Sahara, Albares assured that the Government has not changed its position on the former Spanish colony, which has been occupied by Morocco for 46 years.

The minister did express his wish that the crisis with Morocco that began last year be closed as soon as possible due to the entry into Spain of the leader of the Polisario Front,

Brahim Ghali

.

In this sense, he stressed that the gestures that Felipe VI is making towards the neighboring country - asking first to "walk together" to open a "new relationship", and visiting the Moroccan stand at Fitur this Wednesday - are in "perfect harmony" with Executive policy.

"It seems to me the most normal thing in the world," Albares said about the Fitur episode.

Likewise, he recalled that the King is "an asset of Spain's foreign projection," reports

Europa Press

.

Specifically, the minister expressed his wish that his Moroccan counterpart, who was called for consultation by Rabat at the beginning of the crisis, return to Spain as soon as possible.

The crisis caused a massive influx of immigrants in Ceuta and a legal process in Spain.
