Two people died on Monday in a fire at a gas station on the site of the Langen-Bergheim-Ost service station near the municipality of Hammersbach in the Main-Kinzig district. What exactly happened and why was initially not clear. According to a witness, a "small explosion" occurred around noon. After that, a fire developed at the petrol pumps. According to the police headquarters in south-east Hesse, at around 12 noon, two cars were parked in the area of ​​the gas station. Both vehicles were largely destroyed by the flames. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames upon arrival. But for two people, any help came too late.A body was discovered in one of the cars, and according to police information, a second was found nearby. The identity of the dead was not yet clear on Monday evening. The Hanau public prosecutor's office and the Hanau criminal police are investigating.

Only in August last year was the gas station at the Gräfenhausen service area on the A5 between Darmstadt and Frankfurter Kreuz completely destroyed by fire; A 54-year-old driver crashed into the facility at 150 km/h and died. The impact of the car caused enormous damage to the gas station, which had to be rebuilt. After the accident, the rest area was closed for almost three months. During this time, the urgently needed parking spaces for trucks, which are already lacking in the Rhine-Main area, were no longer available.
