• The European metropolis of Lille will try to tackle air pollution in the metro.

  • Two air purification processes will be tested in a station for a period of three months.

  • If the results are positive, the most efficient system could be permanently installed on the network.

While the North is emerging from four consecutive days of fine particle pollution, at the level of the European metropolis of Lille (MEL) we are interested in the air we breathe underground.

The institution has just announced the launch of an experiment aimed at purifying the atmosphere of the metro.

The least we can say is that the air in the Lille metro does not have much to envy to the outside air in terms of pollutants.

The latest measurements carried out by Atmo, in 2013, revealed the presence of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, various particles in suspension, carbon monoxide, lead… All at very heterogeneous concentrations.

The results of a new study, conducted in early 2021, have not yet been released in detail.

The MEL nevertheless assures that the “studies carried out have shown that the Lille metro presents results lower or similar to other French underground railway enclosures”.

Two companies, two processes

Still, the idea of purifying all that a little is not so far-fetched.

For this, the MEL will install two different air treatment devices from March in the "Gare Lille-Flandres" metro station for a period of three months.

The first, Terrao, is developed by a local company, Starklab.

Its process "is based on a natural disinfectant, calcium chloride, which acts when air is bubbled through the water in order to 'wash' it", we explain.

The second, Oxylon, is also manufactured by another regional company, Bioetos.

The system "sucks in the air, accelerates it and puts it in contact with a mixture of water and microalgae thanks to two high-pressure fans, thus making it possible to capture several polluting gases, CO2 as well as PM10 and PM2.5 microparticles. ".

If the results of the experiment prove conclusive, the most efficient device could be installed permanently and extended to the underground network.
