At the end of September 2019, the county administrative board received a report from the district veterinarians in the county about a lack of animal husbandry in a woman from an inland municipality.

According to the report, the woman had a horse that was in such poor condition that it died the day after the veterinarian visited the farm.

The County Administrative Board visited the farm shortly afterwards and found nine ponies.

Several horses stumbled and were in need of veterinary care.

Seven of the ponies were killed due to captivity.

Another killed due to dental problems.

- It was about severe lameness, it was very clear.

The horses have all the pressure on their hooves, it is an incredible pain.

One of them also had to be killed due to dental problems, says Annelie Grip Hansson, county veterinarian in Västerbotten.

Gave prescription medicine

The woman had on her own initiative given the horses prescription medicine that had been prescribed earlier to another sick pony.

The County Administrative Board also noted that two ponies were lean and that the ponies had not received any individual amount of feed.

Convicted of animal cruelty

In early April 2021, the woman was convicted of animal cruelty for six horses by Lycksele District Court.

The woman appealed the verdict to the Court of Appeal for Upper Norrland, but there the verdict was upheld.

During a court hearing, it was also discovered that the woman had received the medicine she gave to the horses from friends in Switzerland.

The County Administrative Board has now issued an animal ban regarding hoofed animals.

- The horses limped heavily and needed to be killed, says Annelie Grips Hansson, county veterinarian in Västerbotten.
