According to Radio New Zealand, the reason for this was the eruption of the Hunga Ha'apai volcano and the tsunami that hit the capital Nuku'alofa.

The police and military escorted the king to the villa, the locals were advised to stay away from the coast and move to higher ground.

It is noted that the tsunami wave destroyed the coastline and damaged some of the houses in the districts of Palauli and Satupaitea, located on the southern coast of the island of Savaii.

A tsunami threat has been declared for the Fiji Islands, the Kingdom of Tonga, American Samoa and New Zealand.

Earlier it was reported that an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 was recorded off the coast of Fiji.
