US Senator from Maryland, Democrat Ben Cardin called for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained Bahraini academic and human rights activist Abdul-Jalil Al-Singace.

"No one may be held behind bars for exercising the internationally guaranteed rights to freedom of expression and association," he said in a tweet on his official Twitter page.

No individual should be held behind bars for exercising internationally guaranteed rights to free expression and association.

Ben Cardin also called for the release of all political prisoners in Bahrain.

The Bahraini dissident was sentenced to life imprisonment during a military trial in June 2011, and the verdict was upheld on appeal in 2012 and in the cassation stage as well in 2013.

Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) describes Al-Singace as one of the "Bahrain 13" group of political leaders who were arrested for their role in Bahrain's democratic movement in 2011, and sentenced to life in prison for trying to overthrow the government.
