One of the schools that has had to send an entire class home after the new recommendations is Hällbyskolan, which is an elementary and middle school.

Hällbyskolan has about 460 students and according to the principal, sick leave is high among both teachers and students.

In each class, there are either confirmed covid cases or students who are quarantined at home because someone in the family is ill.

- It makes up for it in the planning, says Linn Johansson, teacher at Hällbyskolan.

High absenteeism

The spread of infection in the schools in Eskilstuna has increased during the first school week.

According to Hans Ringström, head of school for compulsory school, there is a sickness absence of 15 percent among all school staff.

- At several schools, we have several employees who are away.

To be able to maintain teaching, we need healthy staff, he says.

The infection control doctor backs away

The new recommendations have made it for school staff in Eskilstuna.

The infection control doctor Signar Mäktilo tells SVT that he is now backing down as it has had too great an impact on the education.

He will make changes to the recommendations that will take effect from Monday.

- You can not always be right in all situations.

But there is a terrible spread of infection in society and I did not expect that there would be so many schools that would be affected and meet the criteria, then I have to go back, he says.

The new recommendations mean that if there are more than three established covid cases in a class, the principal should ensure that the students in the class do not come to school for five days.

In the clip above, you can hear the teacher Linn Johansson and the principal Anna Östling at Hällbyskolan talk about what has been most difficult with the recommendations.
