Two out of three Sami villages in Norrbotten have already applied for disaster damage protection this year.

So far, no Sami village further south has had to do that - but that may change after the storm Gyda.

Extreme amount

Laara Gråik, reindeer herder Jijnjevaerie Sami village, posted a video on social media on Thursday where he skis in totally water-filled tracks.

The water splashes over the snow.

- It has rained something heavy.

You are used to rain in the middle of winter.

But right now it is an extreme amount that came on a cold blanket of snow, he says to SVT Sápmi.

How does it affect the reindeer?

- The reindeer will not be able to graze in the end if it gets really hard.

It is not possible to do anything right today, now you just have to follow the train and see where it is going.

"No Northug"

Gråik describes how a 20-30 centimeter thick snow cover remains on the ground and which is now soaked after the rain.

- It's strong wind now, that's probably what could save this, but I'm scared.

This was not a good thing.

Until the storm Gyda, Jijnjevaerie Sami village still had a good winter.

So late a week ago it was 30 degrees cold and perfect conditions.

And Laara Gråik keeps her spirits up and can, despite her worries, joke about this week's absurd ski tracks.

- It was a bit heavy before.

Not that you felt like Northug right away, he says.
