The Republicans in the US Senate have failed with a bill for stricter sanctions because of the German-Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

The required majority of 60 out of 100 votes was not reached in the vote on Thursday.

One of the aims of the project, launched by Senator Ted Cruz, was to deprive Biden of the opportunity to authorize exemptions from US sanctions over Nord Stream 2 for reasons of national security.

Nord Stream 2 is to bring gas from Russia to Germany, bypassing Ukraine.

The line has been completed but is not yet operational.

Biden is also against Nord Stream 2. Nevertheless, the Democrat had issued special permits in May that spared Nord Stream 2 AG, based in Switzerland, and its German managing director from US sanctions.

This waiver was expressly made out of consideration for our ally Germany.

In order to defuse the dispute over the pipeline, Germany pledged greater support to Ukraine in a joint statement with the United States in July.
