44 candidates vie for the post of President of Iraq

Today, Thursday, an Iraqi report stated that the number of candidates for parliament to compete for the post of the new Iraqi president reached 44 candidates.


The government newspaper "Al-Sabah", issued today, stated that the number of candidates to compete for the position of the new Iraqi president reached 44 candidates as of noon yesterday, Wednesday, and this number is expected to rise by the end of work today.


The Iraqi parliament had opened the door for nomination for a period of three days, ending today, Thursday, to run for the post of Iraqi president for the next four years.


According to the prevailing political custom in Iraq after 2003, the position of the Iraqi president belongs to the Kurdish component exclusively.


Kurdish sources said that the two Kurdish parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party led by Massoud Barzani, and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan led by Bafel Talabani, will agree to nominate an agreed candidate for the position and will be presented to the Iraqi parliament for a vote.


According to the sources, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan renewed the nomination of the current president, Barham Salih, to occupy the position for a second term, while the Kurdistan Democratic Party is looming to nominate Hoshyar Zebari to compete for the position.


It is expected that a new president for Iraq will be elected during the constitutional deadline, which ends on the ninth of next February.
