The Iraqi parliament elects Muhammad al-Halbousi as its speaker

Representative Muhammad al-Halbousi won the presidency of the new Iraqi parliament, after obtaining the majority of votes, as he obtained 200 votes against 14 votes for his rival Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, and 14 votes were invalidated, after the voting process that took place today.

The Iraqi parliament has resumed its session after a short delay and started the process of selecting the new president.

The process of electing a speaker to parliament was disrupted with each of the competing political blocs claiming that they have the parliamentary majority, as violent altercations took place, after which Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, 73, the oldest member of parliament, fell ill with a sudden health and was taken to hospital.
