Said Makari explains that they do not want to operate unnecessarily and that there are other measures to try first, such as hormone treatments and CBT.

An operation does not necessarily mean that the patient will be well.

In some cases, an operation can aggravate the pain, he believes.

- Sometimes patients want a quick fix.

I experience that many patients are operated on unnecessarily, says Said Markari, chief physician at the endometriosis center in Malmö.

According to him, it is not as simple as just operating away the change in the body.

The operation can have consequences and complications.

He also believes that care in Sweden is of the same quality as abroad.

Rumors of other care abroad

Some patients go abroad because they have heard rumors that they perform another type of surgery there - that they cut off the endometrial foci while burning them off in Sweden.

Said Makari recognizes the statement but dismisses it.

- There is nothing that is done abroad that we do not do here and I can not say that our care is less developed than other countries.

What I missed was a centralization of surgery and we have that now, he says.

Said Makari refers to the fact that it was recently decided to gather all highly specialized care regarding endometriosis in four hospitals.

Dissatisfaction with healthcare

Studies show that women experience a lack of knowledge about endometriosis in non-specialized care and that they are not taken seriously.

Dissatisfaction can also be seen on social media, and a collection of names was recently started with the aim of changing endometriosis healthcare, where more than 2,000 people have signed up.

There is also criticism that the investigations of endometriosis specialists in Sweden take too long.

Several of those who turn abroad find it difficult to get time for an operation in Sweden.

Said Makari is aware that it takes a long time to get a diagnosis.

- What takes time is often to be referred right to us, he says.
