  On January 2, the staff of the Duchang Station of the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve Administration of Jiangxi Province accidentally detected a gull while conducting patrol monitoring at the lower dam of Jishan Lake in the jurisdiction.

By comparing the bird species records of Poyang Lake and Jiangxi, it is found that the Gull has appeared in Poyang Lake for the first time. The arrival of this species has set a new record of bird species in Poyang Lake and even in Jiangxi Province.

  The gull is a medium water bird of the genus Larus of the order Pallididae, weighing 320-350 grams; body length is 420-470 mm.

The forehead is flat and long, and the mouth is slender. The head, neck, waist, tail and lower body are white. In winter, there are unclear dark spots in the ear area. The chest and abdomen are often decorated with pink. The back, shoulders and wings are lightly covered. Gray, the outer primary flight feathers are white with black end spots, and the secondary flight feathers are light gray with white feather ends.

The feet are red, and the whole body is mostly white when flying, and only the wingtips are black.

The iris is yellow; the mouth is slender, deep blood red; the eye area is bright red, and the feet and toes are red.

  The Administration of Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi stated that, except for the breeding period, the Gull lives almost completely along the coast. It lives on the coast, islands, sandbars, beach salt lakes, salt pans, coastal marshes, and occasionally enters the inland plains along the ocean coast. In desert areas, freshwater lakes, grasslands, grassy lowlands, etc.

  The reporter learned that as the protection of overwintering migratory birds and wetlands in the Poyang Lake area has increased, the quality of the ecological environment in the lake area has been significantly improved, and the biodiversity has become more colorful.

The number of birds in Poyang Lake has increased from more than 300 species to 464 species today.
