It was during Monday that several trucks stopped in the snowstorm and long traffic jams began to form in both directions.

On Tuesday, almost a day later, hundreds of road users are still stuck on the Interstate 95 highway in Virginia between Richmond and Washington DC, reports AP.

One of them is CBS reporter Jim DeFede - who has been stuck for several hours.

- The entire national road is a single large parking lot and the road surface consists of clean ice, he says in a video when he reports from his bill.

Two-hour journey up to 21 hours

The temperature shows minus three degrees Celsius and the night has been chilly for many.

- It has been a terrible experience, says US Senator Tim Kaine, who has been stuck for 21 hours, to AP.

Normally, his drive would take him two hours.

On Tuesday morning, traffic workers were able to get out and start helping people off the road, writes the local traffic unit Virginia department of transportation on Twitter.

The traffic has started to ease to some extent, but there is still no forecast for when the road will be fully open again.
