After the trial of former Chadian President Hissène Habré organized by the Extraordinary African Chambers in Dakar, around 82 billion CFA francs were to be paid to some 7,400 identified victims, via an African Union trust fund.

But nothing was done.

As the Senegalese head of state prepares to take the presidency of the AU, in February, an NGO collective held a press conference on Monday to ask him to make it a priority.

Abdourahmane Guèye is now 74 years old.

Senegalese victim of

Hissène Habré

, he addressed himself directly to President Macky Sall.

Mr. President, you made the effort to have Hissène Habré tried in Dakar by the AU.

Since this trial, until today, we are waiting for the African Union to compensate the victims.

So I am counting on you.

"

"

Unacceptable delays

" in the compensation process, due "

to a lack of political will from the African Union

" according to Master Assane Dioma Ndiaye, one of the victims' lawyers and president of the Senegalese League for the Rights of the man.

“

Mr. Macky Sall has a second date with history.

We are starting to set up the fund's board of directors.

The African Union has already put 5 million to feed this fund, but the victims are still waiting for the operationality of this fund.

It would first be a personal victory for Mr. Macky Sall, then it would be a victory for Senegal.

And the third victory would be that of Africa.

Africa which judges its own children.

"

"

As long as the victims are not compensated, the trial of Hissène Habré would have a taste of incomplete

", concludes the lawyer.
