In Haiti, Prime Minister Ariel Henry survived an assassination attempt on Saturday, his cabinet announced on Monday (January 3) in a statement.

"Bandits and terrorists" opened fire on a convoy of the Prime Minister near a church in the locality of Gonaïves, in the north of the country, where he was going to celebrate the 218th anniversary of the country's independence.

Local media reported that one person was killed and two others injured in the attack.

The police were not immediately able to confirm this information.

Arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of carrying out the attack, the prime minister's office said.

The Caribbean country is going through a deep political and security crisis.

The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in the middle of the night, on July 7, 2021, in his private residence in Port-au-Prince had caused a deep stir and further heightened the concern of Haitians.
