Between 2019 and 2021, Umeå municipality reported 13 cases of suspected grant fraud to the police.

From 2020 to 2021, registrations increased from four to seven.

- We see an increase.

I think it can be a combination between us making more checks and following up individual decisions, but also that it is a market with a lot of money in circulation, says Camilla Thunell, deputy head of operations for the exercise of authority.

Despite the increased control of decisions, a man and a woman from southern Sweden managed to steal SEK 2.7 million in assistance compensation from Umeå municipality before they were discovered by the police last year.

The municipality had carried out an inspection at the home of the man who was playing with a disability, but since it had been booked in advance, the man was prepared.

- There is a JO statement where citizens are protected by our constitution that authorities should not come home completely unannounced, says Camilla Thunell.

Hear her explain how it was possible for the duo to cheat the municipality on the million compensation in the clip above.
