A risk of famine hangs over the country

Last month, a senior agriculture official warned of imminent famine risk and called on the government to act.

He was fired a few hours after making this appeal.

In his New Year's message, the Sri Lankan president expressed the hope of reviving the economy, but no concrete announcements of measures were made to resolve this crisis.

For its part, the country's central bank has launched an appeal to obtain more foreign currency as quickly as possible.
