One person was killed in protests in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum

Today, the Sudanese Doctors Committee announced the death of one person in demonstrations in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

The announcement comes after Sudanese security forces fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters participating in the "Million of Martyrs" in Khartoum to demand civilian rule and condemn the bloody violence witnessed in last week's protests, according to an AFP correspondent.

The protesters were marching towards the presidential palace in the center of the capital, carrying Sudanese flags and banners reading "The military to the barracks" and chanting "Apostasy is impossible" and "Power is the power of the people" when security forces fired tear gas.

On Sunday morning, the Sudanese authorities closed the bridges linking Khartoum and the neighborhoods of Omdurman and Bahri, deployed security forces on vehicles equipped with weapons, and cut off communications, including the Internet, in preparation for the demonstrations.

The Sudanese Professionals Association called on the professional entity that played a pivotal role in the uprising that toppled Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, in a statement on Saturday to make 2022 "a year of continuous resistance."

Coinciding with the calls, telecommunications and mobile internet services were cut off in the capital on Sunday, an AFP journalist confirmed.
