On December 28, the rules for traveling into Sweden were changed.

To be admitted, all foreign citizens over the age of 12 must present a negative covid-19 test that is a maximum of 48 hours old.

However, border commuters are exempt from the rules.

Run random sampling on most transitions

Norrbotten has a total of six border crossings with Finland and five of them are unattended for large parts of the day.

Instead, the police run samples or check travelers at specific times of the day.

The constant surveillance takes place on the E4, between Haparanda and Tornio, where thousands of people pass every day.

- In general, people are good at complying with these rules and we take the vast majority of those who travel into the country, says operations manager Mikael Rova and refers to the border crossing between Haparanda and Tornio.

Foreign cars drive straight into the country

In Haparanda, there are a total of five border crossings, three of which apply to car travelers.

When SVT Norrbotten visits Haparanda, it is free on one of the smaller passages and a number of foreign cars drive into Sweden, without showing negative covid certificates that the new rules require.
