During 2021, a total of 282 events in support of ETA were held, which represents an increase of 46% compared to 2020, when there were 193 events, although

etorri NGOs

have been reduced to their lowest level in the last four years , with only five, according to data from the Radicalization Observatory carried out by the Collective of Victims of Terrorism (Covite).

These 282 acts of support for ETA have been concentrated in the Basque Country -97 in Guipúzcoa, 94 in Vizcaya and 20 in Álava- and Navarra (53), although they have also taken place in other parts of the Spanish geography, with five in Catalonia and one in Madrid, to which are added another 12 in the French Basque Country.

Covite has detailed that in 2021 158 graffiti and banners explicitly praising ETA and its prisoners were detected;

59 demonstrations in which the amnesty of ETA prisoners was demanded, "but not the approach to Basque prisons";

25 public tributes to dead ETA members;

five popular festivals "held specifically to praise ETA or harass the Civil Guard, such as the

Ospa eguna

in Alsasua or the

shooting

in Etxarri Aranatz."

He has also observed 30 other acts of support for ETA that cannot be subsumed in the previous categories, such as "Christmas dinners in the public thoroughfare with photos of ETA prisoners, to symbolize that they cannot dine with their relatives on Christmas Eve."

Graffiti and banners

Of all, "the type of act that has increased the most with respect to 2020 has been the appearance of graffiti and banners that extol ETA and its prisoners, specifically 93% with respect to 2020, the year in which 82 were registered" , Covite has indicated in a statement.

Despite everything, the Collective of Victims of Terrorism has celebrated that the tributes to ETA prisoners upon their release from prison, known as

ongi etorri

, have been reduced to five, the lowest figure since the Radicalization Observatory was created , at the end of 2016.

Covite has attributed it to "his constant work of documentation and public denunciation of this type of humiliating and unworthy acts, which has resulted in the rejection of the

Etorri ongi

by the majority of Basque, Navarrese and Spanish

society

, as well as the condemnation from most of the institutions and political forces to them, except EH Bildu. "

In this regard, stressed that "even before the declaration that the EPPK made on 30 November renouncing make

ongi etorri

public, the left -

wing nationalism

and had no choice, for some time, to perform such acts virtually underground".

Criticism of the authorities

"Although we have not managed to win the legal battle, we have won the social battle, which is even more important," said the president of Covite,

Consuelo Ordóñez

. However, Covite has warned that "there are still sectors on the left

wing nationalists

who refuse to stop publicly honor the murderers of ETA", advancing that therefore continue documenting and denouncing there in 2022.

Along the same lines, Covite has warned that "the defense and public legitimation of ETA terrorism in the streets of Euskadi and Navarra is not far from disappearing, far from it," regretting that, despite the fact that "the phenomenon of violent ultra-nationalist radicalization "in both territories does not diminish," the institutions continue without treating this matter with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.

Ordóñez has reproached the authorities for the fact that prevention efforts "have focused all these years on jihadism and have ignored the main focus of radicalization that we had and still have in Spain, which is the Basque ultra-nationalism existing in Euskadi and Navarra."

"Public policies of de-radicalization and prevention of violent radicalization abertzale are conspicuous by their absence," he denounced.

Thus, Covite has stressed that although "the most humiliating acts for the victims" have been reduced considerably, "that does not mean that the left -

wing nationalism

has condemned his past complicity with ETA and have made the ethical path necessary to contribute to the consolidation of peace and coexistence in freedom in Euskadi and Navarra ".

"The cult of the terrorist"

"EH Bildu will be able to

renounce further

ongi etorri

public, but has done so

without condemning them

without having renounced to continue with the transmission of hatred towards anyone who does not share the thinking fan left

wing nationalists

, " he stressed.

However, Covite has not hesitated when stating that "the cult of the terrorist continues to be the daily bread in our streets in the form of graffiti, banners, demonstrations and popular festivals due to the inaction of the institutions and the passivity of justice" .

"Hundreds of young people are growing up with the idea that ETA are heroes," Ordóñez has warned, for whom "claiming amnesty for those in prison for very serious crimes may be legal, but it is a clear symptom of moral and democratic abnormality ".

"Those who have contributed most to this violent radicalization are the leaders of the

Abertzale

left

, who call the murderers of our relatives political prisoners and political refugees the ETA fugitives from justice."

"We are never going to get used to these provocations," Ordóñez emphasizes.
