The phone call will be the second between the two presidents in the past month.

Emily Horne, a spokeswoman for the U.S. National Security Council, told CNN that the leaders will address "a number of issues, including the upcoming diplomatic meetings with Russia."

During the autumn, tensions between Russia and Western countries have increased after Russia mobilized military forces near the border with Ukraine, reports AP.

According to information from Biden's administration, the American president is "deeply concerned" about how the Russian troops have been mobilized near Ukraine, reports the news agency AFP.

Must offer "diplomatic path"

Biden will reportedly offer Putin a "diplomatic way" out of the escalating conflict, but stresses at the same time that the United States is ready to respond if Russia advances further into Ukraine.

The meeting is said to have been initiated by Putin and accepted by Biden because he considers it important to maintain a direct dialogue between the leaders, the White House states.

Representatives of the United States and Russia will meet in Geneva on January 10 to discuss nuclear weapons restrictions and tensions on the border with Ukraine.
