A man was killed in the bad weather that hit the Brazilian state of Bahia (northeast), bringing to 18 the number of deaths since the beginning of November in the region, where 37 municipalities were flooded, announced Sunday the local authorities.

Bahia firefighters have confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man, who drowned in a river in the southern municipality of Aurelino Leal, according to the G1 news site.

The critical situation due to the rains in the region has worsened in the last hours.

More than 11,000 people evacuated

The day before, local authorities had reported 19 municipalities affected by the floods.

On Sunday, a joint operation between the Federal State and the State of Bahia mobilizing personnel, helicopters and equipment to come to the aid of thousands of residents trapped by the floods was underway, with the cooperation of other States such as those of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Sao Paulo.

Friday, Civil Protection said more than 11,000 people had been evacuated and 4,200 others directly taken care of by the authorities after having to abandon their homes.
