26 December 2021 A new phase of ordinary layoffs of 13 weeks for 3,500 employees of the steel plant of Taranto of the Acciaierie d'Italia group, formerly Ilva, starts on 27 December.

The letter from the company to the unions

The steel company with a

letter

signed by the director of Human Resources, Arturo Ferrucci, explained to the unions that

the new Cig

depended on the problems of the Taranto site starting from the inactivity of the

blast furnace 2

from March 2020 for about a year, which deprived the plant of the production of about 5 thousand tons of cast iron.

To this Acciaierie d'Italia adds the stop of the

blast furnace 4

, starting from last April, with the loss up to last July of another 5 thousand tons of pig iron. Finally, the company, in the letter that initiates the Cig procedure, writes about the new shutdown of the blast furnace 4 since last December 1 due to plant problems that are being faced with new works. The further shutdown of the blast furnace 4, the company specified, affects the rolling and reworking downstream, as well as the

steel plant 1

, which is also subject to shutdown.

Meeting with company unions

On the new redundancy fund which starts from December 27, the unions have already met the company but the discussion has been resolved in a stalemate as it has happened in the past.

Uninterrupted Cig since 2019

Since July 2019 there has never been an interruption of the Cig used with various reasons. Starting from this date, that is a few months after the takeover of Ilva in Extraordinary Administration (the commissioners), which ArcelorMittal Italia first and after Acciaierie d'Italia (in the latter company the State is present with Invitalia) are systematically by resorting to the redundancy fund between ordinary and Covid.

The Cig is currently used for about 2,000 actual employees out of 3,500 maximum demand - the highest number indicated in the maximum request is needed by the company to ensure management flexibility - but last year, due to the Covid pandemic , there were also royal peaks of 4 thousand cassintegrati.

The Cig just finished in Taranto was opened at the end of September. To this further 13-week layoff cycle, from the end of 2021 to the beginning of 2022, are added the various stops that various plants have had for various problems, both in the primary cycle, such as blast furnaces, and downstream of it, such as the Train tapes. All this has produced as a result that the Taranto site will not close in 2021 at 5 million tons of steel as expected months ago, but around 4 million tons compared to just over 3 million last year, which represents an all-time low. . Despite a decidedly positive steel market. However, the Taranto plant remains the largest industrial complex for steel processing in Europe.

Bernabè's announcement: decarbonisation within 10 years

In Acciaierie d'Italia the State has also been present since April 2021 through the government agency Invitalia which, with the payment of 400 million, holds 38 per cent of the share capital, 50 per cent of voting rights and expresses the chairman of the BoD and two directors.

The current president of Acciaierie d'Italia is

Franco Bernabè

who announced that the Board of Directors of the former Ilva of Taranto is working on a decarbonization plan for the company in 10 years, as part of the ecological transition.
