Brazil Coronavirus leaves another pandemic of orphans
More than
11,000 people were displaced
and almost 4,200 needed shelter due to floods caused by heavy rains in 19 municipalities in the Brazilian state of
Bahia
(northeast), local authorities reported.
The heavy rains in the region since the beginning of November have caused 17 deaths, the last registered last Thursday, according to a balance from the
Superintendency of Protection and Civil Defense of Bahia (Sudec).
A total of 66 municipalities were in an emergency situation due to the storms in the last hours, according to Sudec.
In the twenty cities hit by the climate phenomenon in the last hours, including
Guaratinga, Itororó and Coaraci,
the number of evicted people reached 11,260 and the number of people who needed shelter from the authorities amounted to 4,185, according to data from Sudec del Friday night.
The federal and state governments on Saturday mounted a joint operation, with the collaboration of other states, to mobilize personnel, aircraft and equipment, and provide relief to residents in flooded areas.
"We are fully mobilized, taking all measures, to ensure the necessary support to the victims of the heavy rains that hit Bahia this Christmas," Bahia Governor

In addition, flooding and traffic interruptions were recorded on 17 roads, some with landslides or stone collapses, the state infrastructure secretary reported.
In a sample of the seriousness of the situation, Salvador, the capital of Bahia, accumulated 250 mm of rain in the month until Friday, a figure that represents about five times more than the historical average of 58 mm for December, said Civil Defense from the city.
