December 25, 2021 “Christmas can be difficult for those who have lost loved ones. Especially this year I understand why ". And who better than her, Queen Elizabeth II, can make sense of these words? She who, on April 9, became a widow after the death of her prince consort, Philip of Edinburgh.

In an unusually touching and intimate Christmas speech, the sovereign wishes to greet her subjects on live television, in the traditional message of December 25th. Elizabeth, who will turn 96 next April, said she and her family miss the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away almost 100 years after more than 73 years of marriage together.

In a red dress and the classic round of pearls, the Queen spoke sitting at a table, next to a photo with her beloved husband Philip, taken in 2007 on the occasion of the 60th wedding anniversary (the diamond wedding). On the dress, she had pinned a sapphire brooch with diamonds, which she wore on their honeymoon and their wedding anniversary.

Buckingham Palace this week announced that a commemoration for Philip will be held in Westminster Abbey in the spring after only 30 people were able to attend his funeral due to Covid restrictions. The queen fondly remembered the prince, saying that his "sense of duty, intellectual curiosity and the ability to get the fun out of any situation were all unstoppable."

The queen then underlined the impact of Covid on the Royal family's Christmas holidays.

This year “Covid means again that we cannot celebrate as we would have liked,” he added. The Queen canceled her usual trip to the Sandringham estate in eastern England as a precaution, staying at Windsor Castle instead. She also has decided not to attend the traditional Christmas morning service at the castle's St George's Chapel, although the rest of the family were present.
